EQUIPMENT

I get asked all the time about what equipment I use. Well, not really but I’m going to tell you anyway!

BRASS

I’m a Yamaha Performing Artist and my main ax is the 891Z tenor trombone.

  • 882G Large-bore tenor trombone for classical music

  • 613H Bass Trombone

  • YSL-646 Medium bore Tenor Trombone

  • YBL 622 Bass Trombone

  • YEP 842 Euphonium

MOUTHPIECE STUFF!

I’ve partnered with PICKETT Brass who have created my signature mouthpiece line. I am beyond impressed with these guys. Their craftsmanship is without parallel.

(1) The “Live 1” model small-shank tenor mouthpiece...This has been my staple for rock, and pop as well as demanding lead parts. The efficiency is unreal, but never at the expense of a fat, brilliant, and rich sound. It has an unabashedly aggressive power curve… It hooks up with the brighter rock-oriented trumpet and sax sounds. When playing in a loud big-band or rock environment, you will hear yourself and be heard.

(2) The “STUDIO A” is also a small-shank tenor mouthpiece. Clear, dense, precise fat sound with projection and efficiency and wonderful flexibility and response in all ranges. This is the mouthpiece I used on the Blood Sweat and Tears Tours, and it’s my go-to for most work around town. It’s designed to be versatile and meet the demands of whatever piece of music is put on the stand!

(3) The “DBLR” Bass trombone mouthpiece. For years I wondered if a bass trombone mouthpiece could be made to address the unique demands of doubling between tenor and bass trombone. It needs to be efficient AND sound great, with no sacrifice in clarity or ease in any register. Another goal was to create a mouthpiece that facilitates ease of the quick-switching which is demanded in a Broadway pit: the mouthpiece needs to have a bit of “purchase” on the face…..not feel too huge or slip around. Pickett did it. This mouthpiece is not huge, yet there is zero panic getting out the (normally) challenging low C’s and B’s. Again, the efficiency is unreal. The sound is an alive, focused, and fat bass voice at ALL volumes. You don’t have to blow the walls down to be heard!

(4) (New!)The “6.7M” is designed specifically to bring your medium-bore .525 horn to life. If you “sort of” like a 6.5A, and maybe a 6 3/4 is too tight, this is in the sweet spot between. Fat clear sound in all registers, and never “tubby”. I use this frequently in the studio where the part is “meaty”, but not full-on orchestral. I use it in Broadway pit orchestras as well, particularly when the book is stylistically “all over the map”

(5) (New!) The “6.7S”. This has he same rim size and feel of the 6.7, however the throat and backbore are tailored to match up great with smaller horns like the 2B, 3B, Bach 6,8,12,16, Conn 6H, Yamaha 891Z etc. A great mouthpiece with a fat and clear sound and a great choice if you go between small and medium horns.

WIRELESS MIC RIG

I proudly endorse AMT. I use the Quantum 7 system with the P808 mic and it has been a huge sonic upgrade. It’s been flawless and easy to set up. http://www.appliedmicrophone.com

STUDIO MICS

I’m a bit of a mic fanatic and use a variety of mics both new and classic. I find myself reaching for the Lewitt LCT series mic more than any other. It is unbelievably quiet, can handle even the loudest brass, and captures the true sound. I rarely have to touch an EQ knob, because the recorded sound sits in the mix effortlessly. I’m happy to endorse Lewitt! and www.lewitt-audio.com
